Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

What is FERPA?

FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of a student’s education records. Under most circumstances a student’s records (except Directory Information) will not be shared with any third party without the student’s written and signed consent.

FERPA Rights

All Lincoln College students are accorded all the rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), the Buckley Amendment. The College is required by Federal Law to provide annual notification to students of their FERPA rights. Students will receive a FERPA Annual Notification at the start of the academic year.

The FERPA Policy for Lincoln College is available in the Registrar’s Office.

Changing FERPA Restriction

The independent/dependent status of a Lincoln College student is based on the answers given in Step Three of the FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). If a FASFA was not completed by the student, the status of a student will default to ‘FERPA Restricted’.

A student may change their status of ‘FERPA Restricted’ by completing a form, ‘Authorization to Discuss Educational Records’.
Note: Outside of SOAR sessions, this form will be available in the Registrar’s Office.

Directory Information

Some personally identifiable information from a student’s education record, designated by Lincoln College as directory information, may be freely shared without the student’s prior consent.

Directory Information at Lincoln College includes:

  • Name
  • Photograph
  • Enrollment status
  • Address and phone
  • Date and place of birth
  • Degree program
  • Degrees earned
  • E-mail address
  • Dates of attendance at the College
  • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
  • Weight and height of athletic team members
  • Honors and award

On a rare occasion, a student may refuse to permit the disclosure of Directory Information, including verification of enrollment. If a student wishes to prevent disclosure, the student must complete the Request to Prevent Disclosure of Directory Information, available from the Registrar’s Office.
