They say basketball is a game of runs – this was definitely the case Wednesday night in Ina, IL. Lincoln jumped out to a 22-7 lead early in the game. Rend Lake took an 8 point lead with about 6 minutes to go in the first half, only to see the Lynx go on another run to lead at half 42-39. Lincoln jumped out to a 62-42 lead during the first eight minutes of the second half. The host team made it a game down stretch to close within two points, 78-76 with 10 seconds left. Chris Ware secured the rebounded and was tied up with a jump ball, Lincoln possession. On the ensuing inbounds play, Kenyon Smith was fouled, making his first free throw and DeMarius Sumrell was able to secure the rebound for the Lincoln win.
Kenyon Smith lead all scorers with 20 points on 5-5 shooting from the 3 point line. DeMarius Sumrell added 18 points, Chris Ware 14 points with 8 rebounds and Steve Hines 10 points. “For a bunch of freshman, I am proud of the way they were able to come out on top with a win. Obviously to lose a twenty point lead is disturbing, but being able to withstand the pressure on the road and not lose the game is something our young kids can learn from and build confidence. I thought Kyler Works did a nice job of coming in off the bench, as did Kiel Turpin. We need to do a better job of guarding the ball, giving up 32 free throws is something we cannot continue to do as the season moves forward.”
Lincoln will play in the John Wood Classic on Friday vs. Kirkwood & Saturday vs. Hannibal LaGrange JV.
