Coach Sexton is entering his third year as the Head Coach
for The Lynx. Prior to becoming Head
Coach, Sexton was an assistant for The Lynx under NJCAA Hall of Fame Inductee,
Dan Hemenway. Coach Sexton returned to
Lincoln after graduating in 2003 from Lewis University in Romeoville, IL.
Since taking over the program in 2007, Coach Sexton has
brought in the largest recruiting classes in Lincoln College history. Sexton’s athletes come from across the
country and world (13 states in total, and athletes representing Brazil,
Poland, and Australia). “Having all of
these talented athletes come from all over the world to compete for this team,
is a testament to not only our program, but our institution. As alumni, I can obviously see why athletes
and students would want to come to Lincoln, but what we are now seeing are
extremely talented athletes who have plenty of options out of high school,
choosing Lincoln College to start their athletic and academic careers,” boasts
Coach Sexton.
In Coach Sexton’s debut season as head coach, Coach Sexton
produced 18 All-Americans at the NJCAA National Championships. Coach Sexton’s team also broke 5 team
records, 12 Region IV Records, and earned 45 personal bests. Also in his first year as head coach, Sexton
had his first NJCAA National Champion in Joe Taylor (100 Back). The men placed 2nd, and the women
4th, respectively at the 2008 NJCAA National Championships.
Coach Sexton’s second season was just as impressive as his
first. In his second season, Coach
Sexton produced 26 All-Americans, broke 9 team records, set 12 new Region IV
Records, and 48 personal bests. The men
placed 2nd, and the women 5th at the 2009 NJCAA National
Championships.
In Sexton’s second season, he had his second NJCAA National
Champion. Brian Spittler was a two-time
National Champion for The Lynx, winning the 200IM and 100 Fly, while setting
team records in both events. Sexton was
also awarded the prestigious honor of being selected as the 2009 NJCAA Men’s
Coach of the Year, which is voted upon by all coaches at the NJCAA National
Championships.
Sexton’s swimmers and divers are also no strangers to success
in the classroom. Since returning to The
Lynx as an assistant in 2003, the program has carried a cumulative team GPA
over 3.1, has had one salutatorian, over 15 athletes inducted into the Phi
Theta Kappa academic fraternity, and over 20 athletes have been selected as
Who’s Who of Students amongst America’s Junior Colleges.
Before returning to Lincoln as a coach, Coach Sexton was a
captain for the Lynx, and was a 9-time NJCAA All-American, and held 5 team and
Region IV records for The Lynx. Sexton
is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa academic fraternity, was selected as
Who’s Who of Students amongst America’s Junior Colleges, and graduated with
high honors from Lincoln.
After Lincoln, Sexton continued to Lewis University, where
he was selected captain both his junior and senior seasons. While at Lewis,
Coach Sexton held records in the 200, 500, and 1000 freestyle events. Sexton
was also part of 5 record breaking relays, two of which still hold records at
Lewis.
Coach Sexton graduated in 2003 from Lewis University,
receiving his Bachelor’s degree in History, and a double minor in Secondary
Education and Political Science.
In addition to coaching, Sexton is an instructor of Social
Sciences, teaching American Government and Sociology. Coach Sexton has also been awarded the Who’s
Who of Teachers in America.
Coach Sexton also serves as the Director of Coaching for the
Aqua Lynx Swim Club, which operates out of Lincoln College. Coach Sexton is also a member of the College
Swim Coaches Athletic Association, American Swim Coaches Association, and
United States Swimming.
