Lincoln College Stats:

Chelsea Rhoades     8 Kills, 2 blocks

Courtney Reinken    3 kills
Kristen Wright         11 set assists, 2 points

Beth Daniels             1 kill, 1, block
Stefani Martin           1 dig, 1 point
Kristi Naylon             1 kill, 2 blocks

LC Coach Mark Tippett:  Well, we made a lot of unforced errors tonight and our passing was not good enough to give our offense a chance to get in rhythm.  RMC did a good job on defense which frustrated our hitters quite a bit.  In general we looked like a team playing their first match together, which is just what we are.  I am confident that we have the talent and desire to fix the issues we had tonight and improve on our performance the next time out.

Lincoln College will host Illinois Valley College on Wednesday, August 31st in a 6:00 pm match.

8/31/2011
The Lincoln College volleyball team picked up their first with of the 2011 season with a straight sets victory over visiting Illinois Valley Community College.  LC (1-1) defeated IVCC 25-23, 25-22, 25-17.

Jana Wright             3 digs, 4 points
Megan Tompkins      8 digs, 3 points
Jacqui Kane              5 kills, 2 points
Kelly Anderson          4 kills

LC Coach Mark Tippett: We started this match looking a lot like we did in our first match a few days ago.  We were slow on defense, missed serves and got down early.  I believe we were behind 15-20 when things started to turn around.  We picked up our intensity on defense and our passers started to focus in which got our offense going.  Coming from behind to win the first set was a much needed psychological boost.  In set two we looked more relaxed and aggressive on offense.  We let a big lead slip away late in the set, but our players kept thier composure and held on for the win which is a very good sign.  We still have a lot to work on, but tonight it was clear we are headed in the right direction.

Lincoln will travel to Oakton Community College on Saturday for three matches.
9/3/2011

The Lincoln College volleyball team (4-1)ran the table at the Oakton Community College Invitational on Saturday by defeating all three of their opponents and improving to 4-1 on the season.  Lincoln swept their first two matches of the day in straight sets over Oakton (25-15, 25-23, 25-14) and College of DuPage (25-12, 25-10, 25-17).  That set up a showdown between the Lady Lynx and Harper College which was also 2-0 going into the final match of the day.  LC got off to a fast start and took set one 25-14.  They built a comfortable lead in set two, however Harper was able to scrap their way back into the set and eventually won it 27-25.  Lincoln regained the momentum in set three and went on to win 25-11 then took set four for the match victory by a score of 25-20.

Lincoln College Stats:

Jenna Merkel                          22 kills, 9 digs, 32 points, 8 aces
Chelsea Rhoades                     23 Kills, 8 blocks
Kristen Wright                         39 set assists, 16 points, 4 digs
Vicky Arriola                           37 set assists, 31 points, 5 aces
Megan Tompkins                    28 digs, 9 points, 3 aces
Courtney Reinken                   14 kills, 2 blocks
Kelly Anderson                        13 kills, 6 blocks, 16 points, 6 aces
Jana Wright                             17 digs, 5 points
Kristi Naylon                            10 kills, 6 blocks
Jacqui Kane                             8 kills, 6 blocks, 5 points
Beth Daniels                            4 kills, 3 blocks
Stefani Martin                         5 points, 1 ace

LC Coach Mark Tippett: Our team performed well in all aspects of the game today.  I was especially impressed with the intensity I saw on defense and with our serve receive passing.  We put a lot of hard work into those two areas this week in practice and it certainly paid off against some tough opponents.  What makes it even more satisfying is that every player on our roster made positive contributions to the victories, and it was obvious that our team is having fun playing together.  Overall I am very pleased with how this group is progressing.

Lincoln will travel to Parkland College on Wednesday for a 6:00 pm match.

9/7/2011

On Wendesday evening the Lincoln College Volleyball team lost their opening match of the MWAC schedule to Parkland College 25-12, 25-16, 25-23.  Lincoln's record is now 4-2.

Lincoln College Stats:

Courtney Reinken     6 kills
Chelsea Rhoades     1 Kills, 1 block
Jenna Merkel           9 points, 3 aces
Kristen Wright         3 kills, 6 set assists
Vicky Arriola            3 set assists, 5 points
Jana Wright             3 points
Megan Tompkins      6 digs

LC Coach Mark Tippett: We got off to bad starts in the first two sets due to some irratic passing and poor serving on our part.  We were not ready to match Parkland's intensity and it led to a couple of lopsided defeats.  In set three though we showed signs of life and played with them.  I believe we have the athletic ability to play with a team as strong as PC, we just need to bring more focus and confidence to the court.  I hope that we will take the lessons learned from this loss and use them to continue to improve.

Lincoln will host the 2nd annual Hampton Inn Classic this Friday and Saturday.  LC game times are 1:00 and 7:00 on Friday and 9:00 am on Saturday.  LC will either play at 1:00 or 3:00 on Saturday as well.

9/9/2011-9/10

Lincoln College went 4-0 this weekend to successfully defend their title at the 2nd annual Hampton Inn Classic Volleyball Tournament.  The eight team tournament featured teams from Region 24, the Chicago area, St. Louis, and Iowa.  Lincoln (8-2) won their pool with victories over St. Louis Community College (25-16, 25-20, 25-18), The College of DuPage (25-14, 25-11, 25-16), and Region 24 foe Rend Lake College (23-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-22).  LC advanced to the championship match to face Southeastern Community College from Burlington, IA.  The two teams met in the final of last year's tournament which saw LC win in a five set thriller.  The Lady Lynx did not have as much trouble defeating the Hawks this time around though as Lincoln jumped out to an early lead in set one and cruised to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-12 three set sweep to win the tournament.

Lincoln College Tournament Totals:

Jenna Merkel           21 kills, 14 digs, 20 points, 7 aces
Chelsea Rhoades     27 Kills,  10 blocks
Kristen Wright         52 set assists, 23 points
Vicky Arriola            47 set assists, 36 points, 7 aces
Megan Tompkins      30 digs, 27 points, 8 aces
Courtney Reinken     16 kills, 3 blocks
Kelly Anderson          20 kills, 9 points, 10 digs
Jana Wright              16 digs, 21 points
Kristi Naylon             10 kills, 11 blocks
Jacqui Kane               14 kills, 6 blocks
Beth Daniels               4 kills, 4 blocks
Stefani Martin            11 points, 3 digs

LC Coach Mark Tippett: I was extremely proud of the effort our team put forth to win this tournament.  We played fundamentaly sound volleyball from start to finish and deserved to win the championship.  Our passing off of serve receive was excellent and our blockers made things very tough for the opposition throughout the tournament.  Once again we were able to sustain a balanced attack and get positive contributions from every player on the team.  It is a lot of fun to work with this group of players, and it is great to see them improving from week to week.

Tournament Notes;  Sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Rhoades (Rushville, IL) and freshman libero Megan Tompkins (Naperville, IL) were named to the All Tournament Team.  Rend Lake College defeated Danville Area College in five sets to win the 3rd place match.

9/14/2011

Prior to their match on Wednesday versus MWAC and Region 24 opponent Danville Area College, the Lincoln College Volleyball Team learned that they had been ranked in the top 20 of the latest NJCAA DII National Poll for the first time this season.  The Lady Lynx, who are currently ranked #19, looked like a team worthy of national recognition in the first set as they jumped out to an early lead and took the opener 25-14.  In set two LC (9-2) picked up where they left off and seemed to be in control of the match until an injury to setter Vicky Arriola caused the team to have to adjust to using a one setter system.  The confusion led to a Danville run and a shift in momentum.  Despite a late surge by LC, Danville was able to hold on and win the set 25-22.  In set three Arriola returned to the lineup, but the Lynx still looked rattled and dropped the set to the Jaguars 25-20.  Lincoln regrouped in set four and led all the way in route to a 25-19 victory to force a deciding set to 15.   In the final set LC came out strong and won it by a margin of 15-8.

LC Stats

Chelsea Rhoades     14 Kills,  9 blocks
Kristen Wright         25 set assists, 13 points
Jenna Merkel           8 kills, 10 points
Kelly Anderson          7 kills, 6 points,  3 blocks
Vicky Arriola            12 set assists, 3 points
Megan Tompkins      10 digs, 9 points
Courtney Reinken     6 kills, 2 blocks
Jana Wright              9 points, 4 digs
Kristi Naylon             3 kills, 1 block
Jacqui Kane               2 kills, 2 blocks

LC Coach Mark Tippett: It seems like whenever we get together with Danville it turns out to be a wild match that usually goes 5 sets and tonight was no exception.  Our passing and defense were fantastic in the first set and a half, but when one of our setters went down we did not respond very well.  Danville's serving got a lot better as the match went on and ours did not which gave away all our early momentum and nearly cost us the match.  We did show a good deal of mental toughness though in the way we played the fourth and fifth sets.  This was the first time this season we have faced a high-pressure situation and our players responded with a fantastic effort to win this important match.

9/16/2011

The Lincoln College Volleyball Team traveled to West Burlington, Iowa to participate in the Southeastern CC Invitational.  LC, ranked #19 in last week’s NJCAA National Poll, came away with a 2-2 record and their first victory over a ranked opponent this season.

Lincoln’s weekend got off to a rocky start with a three set loss to the #18 team in last week’s NJCAA DII Poll, Iowa Central CC.  LC lost by scores of 25-17, 25-6, and 25-16.  The Lady Lynx (11-4) bounced back with a convincing three set victory over Highland CC of Illinois (25-16, 25-20, 25-23).  In their third match, the Lady Lynx battled Highland CC of Kansas who came into the event ranked #17 in last week’s poll.  Lincoln proved to be up to the task by winning the match in 5 sets (25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 16-25, 15-9).  LC’s final matchup was against Clinton CC and it also went 5 sets, but this time Lincoln came out on the wrong end of a tightly contested deciding set to lose the match 25-10, 21-25, 25-21, 12-25, 15-17.

LC Totals:
Chelsea Rhoades             30 kills, 10 blocks
Jenna Merkel                    25 kills, 19 points
Courtney Reinken           27 kills, 4 blocks
Kelly Anderson                 24 kills, 27 points
Megan Tompkins             22 points, 22 digs
Kristen Wright                   57 set assists, 27 points
Vicky Arriola                       47 set assists, 17 points
Jacqui Kane                        15 kills, 9 blocks
Kristi Naylon                       9 kills, 4 blocks
Jana Wright                        9 points, 8 digs
Beth Daniels                       12 kills, 6 blocks
Stefani Martin                   6 digs, 1 point

LC Coach Mark Tippett:  I was extremely proud of the way our team played this weekend.  We faced some very competitive teams, and I believe our players showed they deserve the nation ranking they received last week.  Iowa Central is an elite caliber team and the loss we took to them was one that we learned a lot from.  The scores may not show it, but we fought hard in that match and made them work for every point.  That attitude carried over into the next match against Highland, IL.  The win over Highland, Kansas was a true team effort and one that should give us confidence as we move through the rest of the season.  It was a little disappointing to end our weekend on a loss, but Clinton had a very athletic team and the match had just the sort of intensity that we need right now to improve.  I am sure that fatigue was a factor as it was our third match of the day, but my players fought hard to the end which is all a coach can ask for.

Lincoln will travel to East Peoria on Tuesday for a Region 24 matchup with Illinois Central CC who is currently ranked #10 in the nation.

9/20/11
Lincoln College's record dropped to 11-5 after a 3 set loss to Illinois Central College (#10) on Tuesday evening.  Lincoln (#19) lost by scores of 25-8, 25-22, 25-14.

LC Stats

Chelsea Rhoades     6 Kills,  2 blocks
Kristen Wright         9 set assists, 3 points
Kelly Anderson         5 points
Vicky Arriola            4 set assists, 4 points
Courtney Reinken     2 kills, 3 blocks

LC Coach Mark Tippett: We did not take the court tonight with enough confidence or enthuiasm to compete with an elite level team like ICC.  Set one was a disappointment to say the least.  The good news is that in set two we were able to raise our level of play and showed that we are capable of scoring points against them.  Set three was close until a passing breakdown let them get away from us.  Tonight showed that we still have a long way to go before we will be ready to challenge a top ten team, but the potential to reach that goal is certainly there.
9/22/11
Lincoln College traveled to Galesburg to take on the Carl Sandburg Chargers (12-4) on Thursday evening.  The 18th ranked Lynx suffered a three set defeat by scores of 19-25, 17-25, and 19-25. Lincoln's record dropped to 11-6.

LC Stats

Chelsea Rhoades     6 Kills,  3 blocks
Kristen Wright         9 set assists, 3 points
Vicky Arriola            6 set assists, 5 points
Megan Tompkins      9 digs
Kristi Naylon             3 kills, 3 blocks
Jacqui Kane              3 kills, 4 blocks

LC Coach Mark Tippett: Well, for the second time this week we ran into a team that played a faster and more fundamentally sound game than we were ready to play.  Sandburg is a very athletic team and they have been receiving votes in the National Poll for a couple of weeks now.  They deserved the win tonight, and it was clear that we will have to improve in several areas if we want to compete with teams of their caliber.  We will see them again at the end of October, so I am looking forward to seeing how much we can improve between now and then.

Lincoln is off until next Wednesday when they host Lincoln Land CC for a 6:00 pm match
9/28/2011
Lincoln College lost to visiting Lincoln Land CC in four sets.  LC (11-7) took the first set 25-21, but dropped the next three by scores of 25-18, 26-24, and 25-19.

LC Stats

Chelsea Rhoades     7 Kills,  6 blocks
Kristen Wright         31 set assists, 5 points
Jenna Merkel           8 kills, 7 points
Kelly Anderson          7 kills, 8 points, 5 digs
Megan Tompkins      21 digs, 7 points
Beth Daniels              3 kills, 3 blocks
Stefani Martin 3 points, 3 digs
Jana Wright              9 digs
Kristi Naylon             4 blocks
Jacqui Kane               4 kills

LC Coach Mark Tippett: I was proud of our effort tonight.  We have been battling sickness and injury this week which had several players out of practice and two starters inactive for this match.  The adjustments we made worked well enough to keep us competetive even though we had to play some players out of position. The second and fourth sets were close until we got stuck in one serve receive and gave up several points at once.  Aside from those two runs we played a very sharp match.  Hopefully we will have everyone back for the weekend and will be able to return to our usual system.

On Saturday Lincoln will host a triangular starting at 10:00 am.  The event will feature matches against Oakton CC and Kaskaskia College.
10/1/2011

On Saturday the Lincoln College Volleyball Team hosted a triangular event featuring Oakton Community College of Des Plaines, IL and Kaskaskia College from Centrailia, IL.  In the first match of the day Lincoln used a balanced attack and stingy defense to defeat Oakton in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-17.  The Lady Lynx next match was with Kaskaskia, an NJCAA DI opponent.  The first set saw the lead change hands several times before Lincoln was able to take command for a 25-23 victory.  In set 2, LC was able to overcome an early deficit and win 25-20.  Kaskaskia took advantage of several unforced errors to build a lead in set three and eventually win it 25-16.  Lincoln kept their composure though in set four and worked their way to a 14-8 lead.  However, KC mounted another comback to take the lead 23-21.  After a Lincoln side out, a solo block by freshman rightside hitter Beth Daniels tied the set at 23.  Lincoln then scored on a kill by sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Rhoades to set up a match point opportunity.  Kaskasakia was able to side out, but two costly hitting errors would eventually give Lincoln a 26-24 set and match victory.  Lincoln's record improved to 13-7.

LC Totals:

Chelsea Rhoades     16 Kills,  12 blocks
Kristen Wright         38 set assists, 19 points
Jenna Merkel           23 kills, 10 points
Kelly Anderson         15 kills, 10 points
Vicky Arriola            39 set assists, 4 points
Megan Tompkins      16 digs, 9 points
Courtney Reinken     5 kills, 4 blocks
Jana Wright              12 points, 4 digs
Kristi Naylon             7 kills, 3 blocks
Jacqui Kane              12 kills, 2 blocks
Beth Daniels             8 kills, 6 blocks
Stefani Martin           3 points, 2 digs

LC Coach Mark Tippett: It was a lot of fun to see this team performing at full-strength again.  The return of setter Vicky Arriola meant we were able to use our 6-2 system for the first time in over a week.  This allowed us to run the type of offense we have been succussful with most of the season.  Another bright spot was that our block was strong all day long which made things tough on our opponents.  The Kaskaskia match was very entertaining and one in which we had to work hard for every point.  Our serving consistency was a problem today and it led to a few blown leads, but our passing off of serve receive was very good, so we were able to avoid giving up runs of points.  Overall I was very pleased with our performance.

10/4/2011
Lincoln College traveled to Decatur on Tuesday evening for a match against the Millikin JV team and came away with a straight set victory.  The first set was closely contested and saw Millikin hold a two point advantage most of the way.  The Big Blue stretched their lead to four at 18-14.  After a Lincoln time out, the Lady Lynx came roaring back behind a strong serving run from sophomore Jana Wright to tie the score at 20-20. Millikin managed to get the serve back, and score one to go up 22-20, but LC sided out and freshman Jenna Luck served the remining four points to seal the 25-22 victory.  Lincoln held on to the momentum in set two to build an early lead then hold off an MU comeback attempt to win it 25-17.  Set three was all Lincoln College as they rolled to a 25-13 win to earn the match victory and run their season record to 14-7.

LC Stats

Courtney Reinken     9 kills, 1 block
Jenna Merkel           7 kills, 8 points
Kelly Anderson          3 kills, 12 points
Vicky Arriola            15 set assists, 6 points
Jana Wright              9 points, 3 digs
Kristi Naylon             5 kills, 1 block
Jacqui Kane               5 kills, 1 ace
Chelsea Rhoades       4 Kills
Kristen Wright          11 set assists, 1 dig
Beth Daniels              2 blocks, 1 point

LC Coach Mark Tippett: Our team played well in all aspects of the game this evening.  We improved our serving consistency a great deal which put the pressure on Millikin to side out. In set one we did not take advantage of the gaps in their defense very well in the early going, but once we started making smarter choices we were able to gain control of the volley more often and put MU on the defensive.  In sets two and three we turned up our intensity on defense and played very well at the net which is something we have stressed in practice lately.  Overall I am very pleased with where we are at as we move into the second half the season.

LC will travel to Peoria on Thursday for a match against Robert Morris University.  This match was added to their schedule this week due to a recent opening in the RMU schedule.
10/6/2011

On Thursday evening the Lincoln College Volleyball Team traveled to Peoria to take on Robert Morris University.  The Lady Lynx continued their four match hot streak by defeating RMU 25-23, 25-19, 25-14.  Lincoln's record improved to 15-7.

LC Stats

Chelsea Rhoades     5 Kills,  4 blocks
Kristen Wright         15 set assists, 6 points
Jenna Merkel           6 kills, 7 points
Kelly Anderson          6 kills, 7 points
Vicky Arriola            15 set assists, 8 points
Megan Tompkins      6 digs, 9 points
Courtney Reinken     3 kills, 2 blocks
Jana Wright              7 points, 7 digs
Kristi Naylon             5 kills, 3 blocks
Jacqui Kane               5 kills, 2 blocks
Beth Daniels              3 kills, 2 blocks
Stefani Martin            5 kills, 3 blocks

LC Coach Mark Tippett: The first set was one where we built an early lead then learned a valuable lesson: If you put it on cruise control and stop playing hard, teams at this level will come back on you.  We had them down 17-8  and then started missing serves and making unforced errors.  RMU made us pay for our lack of focus and almost came back to take the first set from us.  Forunately, we regained our intensity and stayed in control for the next two sets.  Our passing was solid most of the night which gave our setters a chance to use all of our hitters effectively.  Hopefully we can keep up this level of play on Saturday when we play two important Region matches at Lewis & Clark.
10/08/11 On Saturday, the Lincoln College Volleyball Team traveled to Godfrey, IL for a triangular at Lewis & Clark Community College. LC came away with one win and one loss. The first match of the day for Lincoln was a 5 set victory over Southwestern Illinois College. LC started out well taking the first set 25-21, then prceeded to drop the next two 23-25 and 20-25. The Lady Lynx rallied in set four to win it 25-13. Set 5 saw several lead changes before SWIC took a late 13-9 lead. After a sideout, Lincoln sophomore Kristen Wright served 6 straight points to close out the set 15-13.

In their match against Lewis & Clark CC. LC started out slowly and dropped the first set 23-25 but rebounded to take set two 25-21. Set three was closely contested and saw the score tied at 20-20 when Lincoln ran out of substitutions and had to play several players out of position. Lincoln eventually lost the set 21-25. In set four, LC trailed most of the way and eventually lost it 22-25. Lincoln moved to 16-8 on the season.

LC Totals:

Chelsea Rhoades 23 Kills, 10 blocks
Kristen Wright 42 set assists, 17 points
Jenna Merkel 19 kills, 23 points
Kelly Anderson 16 kills, 8 digs
Vicky Arriola 27 set assists, 9 points
Megan Tompkins 10 digs, 9 points
Courtney Reinken 6 kills, 3 blocks
Jana Wright 14 points, 7 digs
Kristi Naylon 4 kills, 4 block
Jacqui Kane 12 kills, 2 blocks
Beth Daniels 7 kills, 4 blocks

LC Coach Mark Tippett: We had a rough day on Saturday, mostly due to problems that we made for ourselves. Our serving was quite bad at times which put a lot of pressure on our serve receive game. The SWIC match was a struggle from beginning to end. They served us short a lot and we did not handle it very well. It took a huge effort in set 5 to comeback and get the win. The Lewis & Clark match was frustrating because we did not take advantage of gaps in their defense very well and we continued to serve poorly, especially in set 3. We missed 6 serves in that set alone and let them get away with missing 5 and being out-of-rotation on another. That loss put us in the hole against them and we never really recovered in set four. We will certainly be spending more time serving in practice.

Lincoln College will host the Greenville JV team on Tuesday for a 6:00 PM match.
10/11/11

The Lincoln College Volleyball Team picked up another win at home on Tuesday evening as they defeated the Greenville JV team in straight sets.  LC (17-8) won by scores of 25-11, 25-17, and 25-14.

LC Stats

Courtney Reinken 7 kills, 1 block
Chelsea Rhoades     6 Kills,  5 blocks
Kristen Wright         14 set assists, 9 points
Kelly Anderson          6 kills, 5 points
Vicky Arriola            10 set assists, 7 points
Megan Tompkins      6 digs, 4 points
Beth Daniels              6 kills, 3 blocks
Jana Wright              6 points, 3 digs
Kristi Naylon             2 kills, 2 points
Jacqui Kane               1 kill, 3 points

LC Coach Mark Tippett:  Our team played a solid match from beginning to end.  Our serving was better tonight, but we still had more errors than I would like.  However, our passing game was excellent, so the missed served did not hurts as badly as they did over the weekend.  We were without two players tonight due to injuries so we had to play a slightly different lineup.  Right side hitter Courtney Reinken moved over to play leftside tonight and did a very good job for us.  We are off until next week due to Fall Break, and hopefully the rest will help and we will be at full strength for the second half of the season.
10/18/11

The Lady Lynx of Lincoln College defended their home court once again as they defeated the visiting Millikin University JV team in four sets.  Set one saw LC let a commanding lead slip away late and fall to MU 23-25.  In set two Millikin built a 19-13 lead and looked to be on their way to another victory, but this time it was Lincoln who would make a late charge.  LC was able to cut the lead to three at 22-19, when sophomore defensive specialist Jana Wright went behind the service line and led the Lady Lynx to 6 straight points and a 25-22 set two victory.  LC kept the momentum in set three as they led all the way in route to a 25-16 win.  Set four was hard fought by both teams as they traded the lead several times in the early going.  Lincoln would eventually go up 19-17 on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Courthney Reinken.  Sophomore right side hitter Jaqui Kane then served 5 points in a row to get the Lady Lynx to match point at 24-17.  Millikin was able to side out the first match point opportunity for LC and then made things very interesting by scoring 5 in row to close the lead to 24-23.  After an intense volley, an MU hitting error gave Lincoln College the 25-23 set and match victory.  LC's record improved to 18-8 on the year.

LC Coach Mark Tippett: This turned out to be a very interesting and entertaining match.  Both teams played hard and the comebacks that each team was able to pull off showed that neither team will give up easily.  I was impressed by the mental toughness we showed in not letting the first set loss get us down.  We were again without two regular players and had to use a lineup that is likely to cause us to run out of substitutions.  This was the case in set one as we were forced to play players out of position at the end of the set which certainly contributed to our problems closing that one out.  We passed the ball well enough tonight to get ourselves out of a few jams and our serving was more consistent than Millikin's which was a big advantage.  I believe we will get our injured players back later in the week which will be helpful as we push toward the post-season.

Lincoln will travel south this weekend to play at Kaskaskia College and participate in a triagilar at Lindenwood-Belleville.

10/22/11

It was a rough weekend for the Lincoln College Volleyball Team as they dropped two matches on the road.  LC lost at Kaskaskia College on Friday evening 20-25, 25-21, 17-25, 12-25.  On Saturday, the Lady Lynx (18-10) continued to struggle in their loss to Region 24 opponent Rend Lake College in straight sets (25-15, 25-15, 25-18).

LC Stats:

Chelsea Rhoades  20 Kills, 10 blocks
Kristen Wright      25 set assists
Jana Wright         8 points, 13 digs
Kelly Anderson    10 kills, 7 points
Courtney Reinken  9 kills, 5 blocks
Megan Tompkins   20 digs, 6 points

LC Coach Mark Tippett: I expected our team to perform much better than we did this weekend.  There are no excuses for the poor level of play we brought to the court in both matches.  I can not fault the effort we gave or the way our team represented themselves on the court, but we just made too many unforced errors to be competitive at this level.  We will try to work a few of these problems out in practice this week and hopefully produce a higher quality of play for the last week of the regular season.

LC travels to Illinois Valley CC for a match on Tuesday evening and will host Carl Sandburg College on Wednesday.
10/25/11 The Lincoln Colelge Volleyball Team got back in the winner's circle on Tuesday evening with a straight set victory over Illinois Valley Community College. Lincoln came out swinging in set one and never trailed on their way to a 25-17 victory. In set two IVCC kept it close in the early going, but LC eventually pulled away for a 25-15 win. Set three saw the Lady Lynx serve and volley their way to an early lead then finish out the set 25-21. Lincoln's record improved to 19-10.

LC Stats

Chelsea Rhoades 8 Kills, 2 blocks
Kristen Wright 21 set assists, 8 points

LC Coach Mark Tippett: We certainly looked a lot better tonght than we did over the weekend. We played a fundamentally sound match from start to finish, and I was impressed by the hustle I saw on defense. We had several long rallies with IVCC and we seemed to find a way to win most of them. It was fun to see our players performing at a high level and enjoying themselves on the court again. I hope this sort of effort is what we produce from here on out.

Lincoln will host the Carl Sandburg Chargers on Wednesday for a 6:00 pm match.
10/26/11 The Lincoln College Volleyball Team pulled of an amazing comeback to defeat the visiting Chargers of Carl Sandburg College on Wednesday evening. Sandburg (27-10) had beaten Lincoln in straight sets a little over a month ago. They appeared to be on their way to a similar result after taking the first two sets from LC by scores of 25-16 and 25-14. However, the Lady Lynx fought back in set three to win 25-21. In set four, neither team could build more than a two point lead, until Lincoln was able to go up 11-8. They extended the lead to 12-8 after libero Megan Tompkins chased down a ball that was nearly over the Lincoln bench. The save set up a kill by sophomore right side hitter Courtney Reinken. LC would use the momentum boost to go on and take the set 25-16 and force a fifth set.

In the deciding set to fifteen, it again looked like CSC would take the match as they jumped out to a 10-5 lead. After an LC timeout, freshman middle hitter Beth Daniels put down a kill to give LC the sideout. LC then scored 5 straight behind the serving of sophomore setter Kristen Wright. Sandburg sided out to tie the set at 11 and after several hard fought rallies, scored three in a row to reach set and match point at 14-11. A Sandburg hitting error gave LC another chance and freshman outside hitter Jenna Merkel made the most of it serving three points to give LC a 15-14 advantage. The Chargers managed a sideout, to tie the score at 15, but a kill by sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Rhoades put LC up by one and a tip kill by freshman Kelly Anderson completed the comback with a thrilling 17-15 set and match victory. With the win, LC moves to 20-10 on the year.

LC Stats:

Jenna Merkel 13 kills, 7 points
Chelsea Rhoades 8 Kills, 2 blocks
Kristen Wright 25 set assists, 18 points, 6 digs
Courtney Reinken 10 kills, 1 block
Kelly Anderson 4 kills, 3 points
Vicky Arriola 12 set assists, 4 points
Megan Tompkins 20 digs, 6 points
Beth Daniels 6 kills, 1 block
Jana Wright 13 digs
Jacqui Kane 5 kills, 2 blocks
Stefani Martin 2 digs, 1 point

LC Coach Mark Tippett: What an incredibly entertaining match this turned out to be It is rare that a team can come back from being down 2 sets to none and win, but our team showed that they had the heart and determionation to do just that tonight. Sandburg is the top seed in their Region and they have some excellent athletes on their team. In the first two sets they were faster and more consistent than we were. But in set three our passing improved which gave us a chance to control the volley off of serve and avoid giving up runs of points. Once we started blocking better and hustling a bit more on defense, we began to play with more confidence. The comeback in set five took a tremendous effort. I am very proud of the way we played tonight and our players should be proud of themselves for stepping up to the challenge and playing some great volleyball.
10/29/11 On Saturday, the Lincoln College Volleyball Team honored their sophomore players and families prior to their match with Sauk Valley Community College. Lincoln went on to win the match three sets to one. Sauk came out strong in the first set putting LC on the defensive with 5 sraight service points to start the match. LC regrouped and managed to make it close, but Sauk held on for a 25-23 set one win. In the second set, Lincoln overcame some inconsistent serving to win 25-20. Sets three and four saw the Lady Lynx reduce their number of unforced errors and lead most of the way in each set. Set three was won 25-21 and LC took set four 25-14. Lincoln finishes the regular season with a record of 21 wins and 10 losses.

LC Coach Mark Tippett: I am very pleased that our sophomore class was able to earn a win in their final match at home. This was a fun group to work with over the last two seasons and they accomplished a lot. They earned two tournament championships and won over 40 matches. The best part is that they got along with each other as well as any group I have coached and they were positive role models for our freshman class. I am sure they will all go on to do well in school and life. As for our play today, we still have some nagging problems with missing serves and not finishing of plays that we should probably make, but overall we played well. I am confident that if we go into our regional match on Wednesday with the right attitude we will come out on top.

Lincoln plays in the first round of the Region 24 tournament on Wednesday evening. They will play a 6:00 pm match at Lincoln Land Community College. The winner of that match will advance to the Region Final Four on Saturday.

11/2/2011

The Lincoln College Volleyball season came to an end on Wednesday evening when the Lady Lynx dropped their opening round match in the Region 24 tournament to Lincoln Land CC in straight sets.  Despite the fact LC was without setter Vicky Arriola, due to an ankle inury she suffered in practice on Monday, they put up a very good fight against the #3 seeded Loggers.  Backup setter Jana Wright stepped in and helped to keep Lincoln competetive in the first set.  LC led late in the set 20-15, but a 6 point run by Lincoln Land saw the lead disapear and the Lady Lynx eventually fell 25-23.  Lincoln battled again in set two where the lead changed hands several times.  The set was tied at 17 when again LLCC put together a run that led to a 25-20 victory.  With a 2-0 advantage Lincoln Land came out strong in the third set and led all the way to a 25-17 win.  Lincoln College finishes their season at 21-11.

LC Coach Mark Tippett: I was very proud of the effort we gave tonight.  Being without a key player like Vicky Arriola, who has been a constent setter for us all year, was a tough adjustment to make.   I can't say enough good things about the job Jana Wright did taking her place as our second setter.  Jana has not set at all in a match this year, but you would never know it by the way she played.  Our players played with a lot of heart and gave it their best effort.  Overall, it was a great season and I am pleased with the progress we made as a team.  The best part is that the players all got along and bonded as a team as well as any group I have coached.  2011 will be a season I look back on with a lot of fond memories.
