A graduate of Lincoln High School, Dave’s
collegiate career took place at Eastern Illinois University.
While at Eastern, he was a four time All-American placing
3rd, 2nd and 1st in NCAA Division II and 2nd in Division
I. In 1979, Dave competed in the World Championships. Dave
is one of only seven Americans to beat Olympic Gold Medallist
Bruce Baumgartner and the only one to beat both Baumgartner
and Olympic Gold Medallist Jeff Blatnick. Due to the 1980
boycott Dave's Olympic hopes ended.
Dave’s coaching career started
in 1980 as an assistant at EIU. He was an assistant at the
University of Oklahoma from 1982-84. From 1984-87, he worked
as an assistant at the University of Illinois and then went
back to EIU as an assistant in 1987-89 where he earned his
Masters Degree in Sports Administration.
Dave’s head coaching career started
at MacMurrary from 1989-91 where he compiled a 13-11 record.
In 1991, Dave became the head coach at Lincoln College. Since
coming to Lincoln, he has produced 110 national qualifiers,
36 All-Americans, and four national champs. His career record
at Lincoln is 116-86-1 and his teams have finished in the
top six a total of five times.
Dave was voted National Junior College Athletic Association Regional Coach of the Year three times, National Coach of the Year in 1997, and Man of the Year in 1999. Dave was inducted into the Eastern Illinois University Hall of Fame in 1989, The Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame in 1996, and The National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2003.
