Art Scholarship Criteria
Incoming Freshmen must submit a portfolio
for scholarship consideration. The preferred
portfolio presentation is 10-15 slides of the student's
artworks. Clearly defined, legible photographs
may be submitted in lieu of slides. It is recommended that a portfolio
represent the student's ability in a variety of media.
The portfolio should represent the student's strenghts and
best art. The presentation of
the student's portfolio should be considered most important for
the faculty review and consideration.
The portfolio may consist of the following:
- Drawings
- Design Works
- Illustrations
- Paintings
- Ceramics
Students submitting original artworks are strongly encouraged
to include only 2-D artworks. Submission of 3-D artworks
is strongly discouraged due to practicality and safety of student's
artworks. It is recommended that the student send two or three
good slides or
photographs for each 3-D artwork instead.
In addition, achievement awards or letters
of recommendation are encouraged, but not required.
Selection Process
Students should allow two weeks for scholarship
review and consideration. Once the review has been
accomplished, an admissions counselor
will be notified and the student's portfolio will be returned
to the admissions office.
Scholarships are renewable and are based upon student's
progress and performance - in art and overall academics.
Note: It
is highly recommended that students receiving art scholarships
take a minimum of one visual arts course per
semester. Students are also expected to participate/assist
in the art gallery exhibitions held each year at the Layman Art
Gallery.
Zimbie-Whiting Art Scholarship
Since 1992, the Zimbie-Whiting Art Scholarship has been
awarded to the Visual Arts student who excels in both the arts
and overall academic performance. It is awarded at the end of each
year during the Honors assembly.
