Scholarships

Lincoln College Scholarships

Athletic Scholarships are awarded to men with outstanding ability in baseball, basketball, diving, golf, soccer, swimming, wrestling, cross country, track, and spirit leading and to women with outstanding ability in basketball, diving, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, volleyball, cross country, track, and spirit leading. Participation is required. The amount of the award as well as its renewability is based upon the recommendation of the appropriate coach.

Fine Arts Scholarships are awarded to students with outstanding talent in dance, instrumental music, vocal music, photography, speech, technical theatre, theatre, and the visual arts. Students are required to present an audition or a portfolio and to participate in the activities of the department. The amount of the award as well as its renewability is based upon the recommendation of the Fine Arts department.

Private scholarships, available to students having qualifications in the specified area and/or demonstrat­ing an unmet financial need, may be awarded in lieu of other Lincoln College scholarships.

Endowed Scholarships

The following endowed scholarships were established through the generosity of some of Lincoln College’s closest alumni, parents, and friends.

J. Michael Abbott Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student athlete.

The Alexander Family

Awarded to a worthy student in memory of W. Herbert Alexander, class of 1934, and established by Mrs. Genevieve Alexander.

Mary Irish Alvey Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student in memory of Mary Irish Alvey, class of 1918, who went on to complete a Master’s degree in 1981 at the age of 69.

Anna K. and Bernard E. Behrends

In honor of a sister (class of 1936) and brother (class of 1948) and awarded to graduates of a Logan County high school or high school contiguous to Logan County.

Marguarite and Paul Berger Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student. Marguarite was a member of the class of 1936, and Paul was a member of the class of 1932.

Edna Bevan Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student in memory of Ms. Bevan, a longtime friend of Lincoln College.

Daniel W. Bock

Awarded to a deserving student athlete and established by Lincoln College Trustee Daniel Bock.

Melissa Brassard Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student, with preference given to a member of the Lady Lynx volleyball team. Award was established in memory of Melissa Brassard, a volleyball player and posthumous member of the Lincoln College class of 2005.

Arthur and Amanda Bree Memorial

Awarded to a worthy second year student from Logan County, with preference given to students who maintain at least a “B” average and show financial need. Award was established by former Trustee Judith Morley in memory of her parents, Arthur (class of 1936) and Amanda Bree.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Buehler Memorial

Awarded to a deserving freshman student in financial need and good academic standing.

Linda L. Cooper Memorial

Awarded to a deserving student athlete and established with gifts from friends and family. Linda was a former Trustee of Lincoln College.

Percy R. and Grace M. Council Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student and established in memory of Percy R. and Grace M. Council. Mr. Council was a member of the Lincoln College basketball team and the class of 1911.

Carl Crowder Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student and established in memory of Mr. Crowder, a member of the Lincoln College class of 1914.

Lynn C. Denny Memorial

Supported a poetry contest for 20 years before being converted to a fine arts scholarship.

Carolyn Eberle Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student and given in memory of Ms. Eberle by friends of Lincoln College.

Robert D. Edwards Family Memorial

Awarded to a future business major and established in memory of Mr. Edwards by his family. Mr. Edwards was a member of Lincoln College’s Board of Trustees.

Elvira Hoepfner Fleming

Awarded to a worthy student and established by LC alumna Elvira Hoepfner Fleming, class of 1936.

Warren W. Gallagher Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student from a rural background and established by his family. Mr. Gallagher was a former Trustee of Lincoln College.

J. Richard Gehlbach Memorial

Given in memory of J. Richard Gehlbach by his father, the late John Gehlbach, a long-time Trustee of Lincoln College.

R. J. Gossett Theatre

Awarded to an outstanding incoming freshman theater student and established by Lincoln College alumna R. Jean Gossett, class of 1947, to encourage students interested in the The­atrical Arts.

Janet Harris Memorial

Awarded to an outstanding art student and established in memory of their daughter by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Harris Sr.

Hartsburg State Bank

Established by Bernard E. Behrends, class of 1948, and awarded to a deserv­ing student athlete from Logan County or the surrounding area, with preference to Hartsburg/Emden graduates when possible.

James T. Hickey Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student from Logan County and given in memory of Mr. Hickey, class of 1947 and a former chairman of the Lincoln College Board of Trustees, Lincoln collector, farmer, and curator of the Lincoln Collection of the State of Illinois.

Nathan Holden Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student from the area who is a member of the Lynx baseball team and established in memory of Nate Holden, a baseball player and posthumous member of the Lincoln College class of 2003.

Corrine Houston Memorial

Awarded to worthy students from Logan County and the surrounding area and established in memory of Ms. Houston, a retired teacher and a member of the Lincoln College class of 1913.

Albert and Ruth Kapik

Awarded to a high school graduate from Lincoln and/or Logan County and established by Albert and Ruth Kapik.

William A. and Katherine A. Komnick and Marjorie (Komnick) Smith Memorial

Awarded to a deserv­ing student in good academic standing and in financial need and established by Elsie (Komnick) Menzel, Lincoln College class of 1941, in memory of her parents and sister.

Wilbur and Louise Walker Layman Memorial

Awarded to an outstanding performing arts student and established by friends and family. Mr. Layman, Lincoln College class of 1927, was a member of the Lincoln College Board of Trustees.

Logan County Voiture #985 of the Forty & Eight

Awarded to worthy students from Logan County who show an interest in nursing.

Edward R. Madigan Memorial

Awarded to a deserving student, with preference given to a student with an interest in public or government service. This scholarship was established in memory of this distinguished Lincoln College alumnus, class of 1955, by friends and family. Mr. Madigan served in the United States Congress for 18 years and was appointed Secretary of Agriculture under President George H.W. Bush.

Anna Hayes McCarthy Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student and established by her family. Mrs. Mc­Carthy was a member of the Lincoln College class of 1915.

Dr. Jack Means Memorial

Awarded to a graduate of Illini Central High School and established by his family. Dr. Means was a long-time physician in Mason City and friend of Lincoln College.

Maxene Baker Michl Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student and established in memory of Colonel Michl (Ret.), Women’s Army Corp. Ms. Michl was a member of the Lincoln College class of 1939.

Frances Lane Moriearty Memorial

Awarded to two returning sophomore student athletes, one male and one female, with GPA’s of 2.5 or higher. Both scholarships help promote diversity on campus and were established to honor the memory of Mrs. Frances Lane Moriearty by her children, Dr. Pam Moriearty of Lincoln and Scott Moriearty of Boston.

Ralph G. Newman Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student with an interest in history and the Lincoln College Heritage Museum and established in memory of former Lincoln College Board of Trustee member, Ralph Newman.

Novak-Elder

Awarded to a deserving student athlete and established by June Novak-Bock.

Allen Pickering Athletic

Awarded to one male and one female sophomore athlete, rotating through the athletic programs annually. Funds are raised by the annual Lincoln College Golf outing in honor of former coach and administrator, Allen Pickering.

Lowell and Juanita Quisenberry Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student from central Illinois and estab­lished in memory of his parents, members of the Lincoln College class of 1924 (Juanita) and 1928 (Lowell), by their son, Richard L. Quisenberry.

Mark Shannahan Memorial

Awarded to a long distance runner on the Lynx track and/or cross country team and established in memory of their son by Gary R. and Betty J. Shannahan.

Dr. John Shute Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student and established in his memory by friends and family. Dr. Shute was a member of Lincoln College’s Board of Trustees.

Maynard M. and Elizabeth Eberle Small Memorial

Awarded to a deserving student with preference given to a student majoring in literature and established by their daughter, Lincoln College Trustee Mrs. Robert D. Edwards.

John G. Smerek Charitable Foundation

Awarded to a worthy student with a minimum 3.0 GPA and established in memory of John George Smerek by Mark and Mary Ellen Cummings.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Spatz Memorial

Awarded to an outstanding freshman woman from Logan County. Mr. Spatz served on the Lincoln College’s Board of Trustees for fourteen years.

Dale and Marian Spore

Awarded to a Logan County student athlete with preference given to a member of the Lynx golf team.

Robert E. and Rosemary G. Steinfort

Awarded to a Lincoln College sophomore and when available, preference given to a student from the Mt. Pulaski area. The scholarship was established in 2001 by Scott and Kay Steinfort.

Herbert A. Vance Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student with preference given to children of employ­ees of Vance Publishing Co., Inc. and established by his family. Mr. Vance was an Emeritus member of Lincoln College’s Board of Trustees.

David and Carol Walters

Awarded to an out-of-state student who participates in one of the following sports: cross country, golf, soccer, swimming/diving, volleyball, or wrestling.

Ann Wenzel Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student who shows an interest in fine arts, with an emphasis on drawing and design, and established by Ann Wenzel, Lincoln College class of 1938.

Dwight Zimmerman Memorial

Awarded to a worthy student. Mr. Zimmerman was a former Lincoln College Trustee.

Annually Funded Scholarships

The following is a current list of annual contributors to Lincoln College’s scholarship funds as of May 31, 2012. Funds received after that date may be available. The minimum donation required for a named annual scholarship is $1,000 and is renewed annually by the donor.

Awarded to a worthy student from Logan County and established by J.M. Abbott and Associates, LTD.

Angela Beltchenko Dance

Awarded to a full-time sophomore at Lincoln College, participat­ing in dance activities and in good academic standing with preference given to a student with demonstrated financial need. This award was established by Michael and Laura Beltchenko in honor of their daughter.

Commerce Bank

Awarded to a worthy student and established by Commerce Bank.

Dr. & Mrs. David Daniel

Awarded to a student interested in business, accounting, or marketing and established by David Daniel, a former member of the LC faculty.

Faculty/Staff

Awarded to returning students who show academic achievement and partici­pate in college activities and established through the annual employee giving campaign.

R.W. Garrett Insurance Agency

Awarded to graduates from an area high school who are in good academic standing and established by Roger Garrett, owner of the R.W. Garrett Agency, Inc.

Ruth Lee Gee

Awarded to a single parent or child of a single parent, preferable from a Logan County farming family, and established by Carol R. Gee in memory of her mother.

Jim and Nancy Ireland Music

Awarded to a full-time student with an interest in music, partici­pating in musical activities at Lincoln College, and in good academic standing, with a preference given to students with financial need. Established by Jim and Nancy Ireland.

Henry and Margaret Kirschner

Awarded to a worthy student with financial need and established by Margaret Kirschner.

Kiwanis Club of Lincoln

Awarded to a local student who shows academic potential and is active in extracurricular activities that benefit the local communities of Logan County and established by the Kiwanis Club of Lincoln.

Martin Luther King Jr. Minority

Awarded to an ethnic minority student from Logan County with financial need attending the Lincoln Campus and established with funds from the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., breakfast.

Logan County Bank

Awarded to a worthy student and established by Logan County Bank.

H. Safford and Betty Peacock Foundation

Awarded to students who have achieved academic honors and established by LC Trustee Emeritus H. Safford Peacock along with his wife Betty Peacock.

Rotary Club of Lincoln

Awarded to a worthy student and established by the Lincoln Rotary Club.

State Bank of Lincoln

Awarded to a worthy student who graduated from a local high school and established by State Bank of Lincoln in honor of former State Bank Director and LC Trustee John R. Gehlbach.
