LC Volleyball Win 5-Set Thriller at SWIC

October 11, 2013

Belleville, IL – On Thursday, the Lincoln College Volleyball Team traveled to Belleville to take on Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) in their final Region match of the year.  The Lady Lynx started out hot, winning the first set 25-17, and took an early 7-2 advantage in set two, but SWIC battled back and wound up winning the set 19-25.  Set three was evenly played throughout and both teams had multiple set point opportunities, but it was SWIC that came out on top winning it 25-27.  LC regrouped and came out fighting in set four to build an 8-0 lead.  They eventually took the set 25-16.  In the deciding set to 15 Lincoln picked right up where they left off and jumped out to a 4-0 advantage behind the serve of sophomore Alyssa Morales.  Lincoln maintained that four point lead the rest of the way to win the set 15-11.  The victory moves LC to 12-14 overall and 4-3 in the Region.

LC Coach Mark Tippett:  SWIC really made us earn it tonight, but even when we were down two sets to one, our players never gave up and continued to work together.  Set three was a real battle and to lose it after having two set point opportunities was quite disappointing.  I believe a lot of teams would have let a loss like that sink their confidence, but I was impressed by the way we handled it.  The team stayed focused and came out in set four playing like Lynx.  We were able to carry the momentum right in to set five and get off to a good start which is a huge advantage in a set to 15.  Winning this match was significant because it gives us four wins in the Region and secures us no less than the 4th seed in the Region 24 tournament.  This means we will be playing a home match for the first round which was a goal we set at the beginning of the season.

Lincoln is off for Fall Break and will not be in action again until Friday, October 18th when they begin play in the MWAC tournament.  The MWAC tournament will be held at Lincoln College on the 18th and 19th.  Lincoln will play matches at 5:00 and 7:00 pm on Friday and at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm on Saturday.
