Painting
Joe Renegar
Beautiful and majestic
is the sunken landscape
as the new day’s sun
breathes its morning air.
Life will soon overflow
as the water starts to churn
the quiet river,
waking the sleeping dirt beneath it,
giving itself back to where it came.
Battles will be fought
on its green carpeted floor.
Blood will stain
the mouths of the guilty
as the bones turn to dust.
But all is a cycle.
Each giving back
to sustain another day.
Each hoping to feel
the warmth of tomorrow’s air.
Written in Ms. Kirk’s creative writing class, this is an ekphrastic poem, or
one that responds to a painting. Joe found this landscape in a book
of John Updike’s essays on art.
