Volcanoes: Our Planet’s Hot Spots
The Hawaiian Islands provide a unique opportunity to witness the birth, maturity, and eventual death of a volcanic island. In this presentation Dr. Moriearty follows the movement of the Earth’s tectonic plate as it glides over the Hawaiian hot spot far below the surface. The current Hawaiian islands are only a small section of the long series of volcanic islands that have grown from this hot spot, with older eruption remnants stretching almost to Korea. In addition to providing firsthand views of volcanic structures on The Big Island and Kauai, the presentation takes brief side trips to look at how living creatures get to and evolve on these islands and also examines the sleeping super volcanoes over hot spots in North America.
